Press release on Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin’s participation in the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement

The 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was held in Baku on October 25-26. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin led the Russian delegation.

The meeting focused on current issues on the international agenda. The participants stressed the imperative of strictly abiding by the UN Charter and adhering to the fundamental standards of international law, such as non-interference in domestic affairs, non-use of force or threat of force, and respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity. They put special emphasis on the importance of enhancing NAM’s potential and searching for collective responses to the challenges and threats of our time. Following the discussions, the NAM meeting participants adopted the Baku declaration, which outlines the priority areas for NAM’s activities during the next three years, a joint declaration on Palestine as well as a joint declaration on the presidential elections in Bolivia in support of Evo Morales.

In his remarks, Sergey Vershinin read out President of Russia Vladimir Putin’s greetings to the summit participants and set forth Russian approaches to cooperating with the NAM member states and strengthening the international legal foundations of world politics.

Sergey Vershinin also had a number of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the forum, including with Foreign Minister of Venezuela Jorge Arreaza, Foreign Minister of Surinam Yldiz Pollack-Beighle, Foreign Minister of Kuwait H.E Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Foreign Minister of Jordan Ayman Safadi, Deputy Foreign Minister of Syria Faisal Mekdad, and the leadership of the UN Secretariat and other international organisations.
