PRESS RELEASE

With regard to the message published in the newspaper Rus Pravoslavnaya (Orthodox Russia) from a number of public figures, addressed to the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, containing an avowedly anti-Semitic pronouncements, it is necessary to stress that this statement has nothing to do with the official position of the Russian leadership, which decisively rejects any manifestations of interethnic strife and xenophobia, including anti-Semitism.

Particularly regrettable is the fact that the publication of this message coincided with the Special UN General Assembly Session marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, which among other things was the international community's "tribute of memory" to the victims of the Holocaust.

The efforts of the Russian leadership at numerous international forums have been directed to the strengthening of tolerance and to counteraction against discrimination on any grounds whatsoever. It is in this mainstream that there should be considered the resolution submitted by the delegation of the Russian Federation at the 60th session of the UN Commission on Human Rights (Geneva, March-April 2004), entitled "Inadmissibility of certain practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance."
