Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with President and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Nauru Baron Waqa
On November 12, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Baron Waqa, the President and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Nauru, who stopped over in Sochi, Krasnodar Territory, on his way to the Republic of Abkhazia.
Sergey Lavrov and Baron Waqa expressed satisfaction with the development of bilateral relations and pointed out the regular nature of political contacts at the governmental and parliamentary levels.
The parties have agreed to step up their efforts to implement the agreements reached in the past few years, including on cooperation in fishing and on combating money laundering and terrorism financing.
They pointed out the positive effect of the mutual visa waiver agreement for trips by business people, education and humanitarian officials, as well as tourists, which became effective in 2015.
Baron Waqa expressed high appreciation for Russia’s interaction with the South Pacific island states and their regional organisations and for its contribution to UN projects to strengthen natural disaster and climate change resiliency, train personnel and develop infrastructure.
The parties have reaffirmed their resolve to continue to coordinate their positions regarding the UN agenda and those of other international forums.
