Comment by the Information and Press Department on terrorist acts on the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt

674-09-04-2015

On April 8, three terrorist acts killed 13 people on the Sinai Peninsula, the media report. A mortar attack killed nine civilians in a residential area in the city of Sheikh Zuweid. A rocket killed two villagers in a home on the peninsula’s northern area, and two soldiers were killed after an improvised explosive device went off near an army vehicle in the city of Al-Arīsh, the capital of the Governorate of North Sinai.

In connection with this new terrorist spree in Egypt, we reaffirm a principled Russian stance which categorically rejects and condemns any manifestations of terrorism, regardless of the motives of their masterminds and perpetrators. We would like to voice our staunch solidarity with the leaders and people of friendly Egypt in their struggle against terrorism and extremism. We firmly support the efforts of the Egyptian authorities to stabilise the situation on the Sinai Peninsula, and we express our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased.

The Russian Foreign Ministry once again reminds Russian tourists traveling to Egypt not to leave their resorts and to avoid visiting districts with a high risk of terrorism and crime.
