Comment by the Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the execution of Akhlas Akhlaq
As was reported earlier, Russian and Pakistani citizen Akhlas Akhlaq was executed in prison in Faisalabad, Pakistan on 21 December. Akhlaq together with three other men was convicted of attempting to assassinate former President Musharraf in 2003.
It is regrettable that the Pakistani authorities have failed to heed our repeated appeals to lighten Akhlaq's punishment for humanitarian reasons. We also note that Pakistan failed to inform the Russian Embassy in Islamabad of the decision to enforce the sentence.
