304-18-02-2013

PRESS RELEASE

On 18 February a meeting of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen took place in Brussels.

They discussed the current agenda and prospects of Russia's interaction with the North Atlantic Alliance. Special focus was on the problems with Afghanistan taking into account the up-and-coming completion of the NATO mission in the IRA by the end of 2014.

When considering the issue of antimissile defence, Sergey Lavrov confirmed again the approach of Russia to European AMD with a view to the reaching of the agreements that would actually remove Russian concern, providing secure legal guarantees of the non-directionality of the future system against the Russian Federation.

They also considered the schedule of forthcoming events of the NATO-Russia Council during their conversation.

Sergey Lavrov extended to the Secretary General an invitation to the International Conference for Military and Political Problems of the Euro-Atlantic Security planned in this May by the Ministry of Defence of Russia.
