Press release on Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov’s visit to the Togolese Republic
On June 5, Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov, who is paying a working visit to Lome, met with President of the Togolese Republic Faure Gnassingbe.
The officials reaffirmed Moscow’s and Lome’s mutual commitment to giving new impetus to the traditionally friendly Russia-Togo relations. In addition, Foreign Minister Lavrov and President Gnassingbe noted their resolve to promote bilateral political dialogue and commented on the significant potential to expand trade, economic, investment, humanitarian and other ties. They also emphasised the establishment of direct mutually beneficial contacts between the two countries’ businesses.
Discussions on current international and African issues focused on developments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, the Horn of Africa and the Sahara-Sahel region. Russia reiterated its support for the principle of “African solutions to African problems,” which should be supported by the global community based on respect for the states’ sovereignty and other basic UN Charter principles.
