Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to the Republic of Nicaragua

On March 25, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov paid a visit to Managua, where he met with President of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega Saavedra.

The emphasis of the talks was on promoting friendship and partnership between the two countries. The officials discussed the main issues on the bilateral agenda and agreed to further strengthen the Russian-Nicaraguan political dialogue and expand mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields.

They noted with satisfaction that Russia and Nicaragua share similar or identical approaches to key issues and a mutual desire to strengthen cooperation in the international arena.

President Ortega and Minister Lavrov both spoke in favour of the normalisation of Cuban-US relations, the lifting of the embargo of the island and the removal of Cuba from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism.

They expressed solidarity with the government and people of Venezuela and support for efforts to find a political solution to the situation in the country without any destructive interference or external pressure.

The officials also addressed currents aspects of the integration processes in Latin America, including the prospects for cooperation between Russia and the Central American Integration System.
