Comment by the Information and Press Department on civilian deaths in airstrikes in Kunduz
During combat operations in the northern Afghan province of Kunduz on November 3, a US airstrike killed more than 30 civilians, most of them women and children, including a three-month-old infant. Around 20 Afghan civilians were wounded and around 20 homes destroyed.
This is far from the first time that indiscriminate fire by the US military has resulted in civilian deaths.
Predictably, the American reaction was limited to announcing that an investigation will take place. Experience has shown that the findings of such investigations are not made public and those responsible seldom receive adequate punishment.
We strongly condemn the death of civilians in US airstrikes in Kunduz, and demand an immediate and objective investigation into the incident that results in the punishment of those responsible for this tragedy, in the hope of avoiding any repeat of such egregious incidents in the future. We express our deepest condolences to the victims’ families and wish a swift recovery to the injured.
