Press release on Russia-Egypt draft UN Security Council press statement on intra-Palestinian reconciliation blocked by US
On November 16, the US delegation to the UN Security Council blocked the Russia-Egypt draft press statement of the UN Security Council welcoming the agreement to overcome the division in Palestine, signed in Cairo on October 12 with efforts of the President of Egypt.
The majority of Security Council delegations were ready to support this initiative, assuming, as we do, that it would be important and well-timed to signal to the Palestinian sides that it is necessary to take measures to unite Palestinian territories, such as Gaza and the West Bank, under a single Palestinian government. No one must doubt that the Palestinian unity is the most important factor implementing the national aspirations of the Palestinian people and a necessary step for direct as well as objective Palestinian-Israeli talks.
However, Washington seems not to understand this logic. The US delegation refused to work on the text of the statement on the pretext of some facts “that remain unclear regarding the implementation of the agreement.” This is another example of “double standards” in US foreign policy.
