Comment by the Information and Press Department on the situation around the Russian Drama Theatre in Dushanbe in response to a media question
We are aware of the Dushanbe authorities’ plans with regard to the building of the Vladimir Mayakovsky Russian Drama Theatre. The theatre itself is supposed to be moved to an outlying area of the city. These plans aroused serious concern among the theatre’s troupe. As the Russian ambassador to Tajikistan has been told, the decision owes to a planned reconstruction of the central district of the Tajik capital to bring it into conformity with a modern architectural style.
The Mayakovsky Theatre building, where the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic was proclaimed in 1929 and where Yevgeny Shvarts, a well-known dramatist, lived and worked during the Great Patriotic War, is part of Tajikistan’s historical legacy.
We hope that the city administration will take the necessary steps that would enable the company of the only Russian theatre in Dushanbe to continue its fruitful work, while preserving the memories of historic events associated with this building.
