Information and Press Department comment on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Rwanda
On June 3, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will make a working visit to the Republic of Rwanda. He is to meet with President of Rwanda Paul Kagame, who chairs the African Union in 2018, and with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and East African Community Louise Mushikiwabo.
Russia and Rwanda are maintaining a constructive political dialogue based on the similarity of the two countries’ approaches to the issues of establishing a just world order, supremacy of international law, and commitment to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states. The countries have also established close cooperation within the UN and other multilateral platforms.
The agenda to be discussed in Kigali includes a wide range of bilateral matters, primarily concerning trade and economic cooperation. Russia and Rwanda can enhance cooperation in exploration and mining, energy, information technology, agriculture, healthcare and training professionals in Rwanda.
The officials will hold an in-depth exchange of opinions on relevant global and regional affairs, focusing on countering terrorism and extremism. They will also discuss peacekeeping in Africa and search for ways to resolve conflicts in the continent’s most troubled areas, primarily in the Great Lakes region, the Central African Republic and the Sahara-Sahel. Other issues to be discussed include reform of the UN and ensuring sustainable socio-economic development in African countries.
During the talks with the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame, the Foreign Minister will also discuss the current state and the future of cooperation between Russia and the African Union in order to give an additional impetus to the development of mutually beneficial partnership in the political, trade, economic and cultural spheres.
We are hoping that this visit will significantly strengthen the traditionally friendly ties between Russia and Rwanda in various fields.
