On April 8, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ecuador to Russia, Juan Fernando Holguín Flores, visited the Foreign Ministry. During the meeting, he presented Ecuador’s official stance on the events of April 5 concerning the Mexican Embassy in Quito.

We expressed deep concern regarding the armed intrusion of Ecuadorian security personnel upon the Mexican embassy. We reiterated our firm adherence to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, which upholds the inviolability of diplomatic mission premises, ensuring immunity from search, seizure, and other executive actions. We expressed regret over the injuries sustained by Mexican diplomats during the incident.

We view any arbitrary interpretation of the fundamental norms of international law as dangerous. Hence, violations of diplomatic mission inviolability under any pretext, whether in the United States, the Middle East, or Latin America, are unacceptable to us.

We emphasised Russia’s enduring commitment to preserving Latin America as a zone of peace, promoting unity amid its diversity. We expressed hope that our Latin American friends will refrain from actions that might disrupt the traditionally harmonious relations of neighbourliness and partnership and will seek a mutually acceptable resolution of the current situation.
