ON THE ADOPTION BY UN SECURITY COUNCIL OF A RESOLUTION ON THE PALESTINIAN-ISRAELI CONFLICT
Unofficial translation from Russian
PRESS RELEASE
On May 19, the UN Security Council, at the Arab countries' initiative, adopted Resolution 1544 condemning the latest actions of Israel in the occupied territories, in particular in Rafah, a Palestinian refugee camp. The overwhelming majority of SC members, including Russia, supported the resolution.
The members of the Security Council, after condemning the killing of civilians in the occupied territories, called upon Israel to observe the provisions of international humanitarian law, including the cessation of the demolition of Palestinian houses. The international community in its turn should render the affected population in Rafah urgent humanitarian assistance.
It is of fundamental importance that the resolution condemns all acts of violence and terror. On Russia's initiative, an appeal is addressed to both the parties in conflict to fulfill immediately their obligations under the Road Map, endorsed by UNSC Resolution 1515.
The Security Council will continue to closely follow the developments in the situation in the Middle East, rendering necessary assistance to the Quartet's efforts for the earliest possible unblocking of the Palestinian-Israeli crisis.
