On the Situation in the Republic of Guinea
PRESS RELEASE
On December 22, in the Republic of Guinea, the country's President Lansana Conté died after a protracted illness.
Pursuant to the Constitution, the functions of an interim head of state are laid upon Aboubacar Somparé, the president of the National Assembly (Parliament). By his decision the present government has been dismissed.
The army leaders have called upon the population to maintain calm and say they are resolved on preventing a destabilization of the situation in Guinea.
The Russian Federation is intently watching the development of events in the African country, where a large group of Russian citizens are working at the bauxite mining enterprises owned by Russian company OK Rusal, and expresses hope that local authorities will succeed in ensuring legality and maintaining peace. Russian citizens in Guinea have been recommended to have stocks of food, fuel and water.
The Foreign Ministry is regularly receiving and analyzing reports coming in from the Russian Embassy in Conakry and recommends to Russian citizens to refrain from trips to the Republic of Guinea in the near future.
