Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Meets with Abdelkader Bensalah, Speaker of Algeria's Council of the Nation (Upper House of Parliament)

A conversation took place on July 11 between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and Abdelkader Bensalah, Speaker of the Council of the Nation (Upper House of Parliament) of the Democratic and Popular Republic of Algeria, who is in Moscow on an official visit at the invitation of Sergey Mironov, Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
In the course of the conversation Lavrov and Bensalah stressed a shared, principled understanding of the importance of unswervingly continuing the line on developing a multifaceted Russian-Algerian strategic partnership in keeping with the accords reached by Presidents Vladimir Putin and Abdelaziz Bouteflika during the summit talks in Algeria in March 2006.
They gave high appraisal to the friendly and fruitful character of the political dialogue between the two countries, and expressed mutual keenness to deepen it and expand its thematic range. In this context the ministers noted with satisfaction the intensification of inter-parliamentary ties.
The exchange of views on a number of pressing international and regional problems confirmed the adherence of both sides to a multipolar world pattern, the strengthening of the UN's central role, the negotiation methods of resolving conflict situations, and the identity of their approaches to the fight against the terrorist threat, to the achievement of just peace in the Middle East and to ensuring the sustainable development of African countries. The importance was noted of further strengthening the two countries' foreign policy engagement.
In examining the state of, and prospects for business cooperation the emphasis was laid on the necessity of intensifying the work of bilateral mechanisms, which must help find new possibilities for building up trade and economic exchanges and partner ties in various fields.
