Press release on the closing of the 31st session of the FAO Regional Conference for Europe
On May 18, the 31st session of the Regional Conference for Europe of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (ERC) ended in Voronezh.
This session was the most significant event Russia has held jointly with FAO since it joined the agency in 2006.
The conference drew up specific recommendations on the following: building sustainable agriculture and food systems in Europe and Central Asia; the development of ecological farming; the use of digital technologies in agriculture; and the consolidation of FAO's work in the field of forestry and fisheries. The conference approved the priority areas of work for FAO in the region for the next two-year period – supporting small farms, promoting agricultural trade and encouraging the rational management of natural resources in a changing climate. The participants also visited a number of leading enterprises in the Voronezh Region agricultural sector and food industry.
Head of the Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor) and Chief Sanitary Doctor of the Russian Federation Anna Popova met with Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation Jose Graziano da Silva on the sidelines of the closing ceremony. They discussed bilateral cooperation on food security and balanced nutrition, and dealing with antimicrobial resistance in the food supply chain.
The next session of the Conference will be held in 2020.
