Comment by the Information and Press Department on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy Luigi Di Maio
On October 14, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will hold talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Italy Luigi Di Maio, who will arrive in Moscow to attend the 17th meeting of the Russian-Italian Council on Economic, Industrial and Financial Cooperation (Economic Council) as a co-chair from Italy (the co-chair from Russia is Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov).
The Russian Foreign Ministry attaches special importance to maintaining a high level of cooperation with Italy, one of Russia’s leading political and economic partners in Western Europe. Relations with Italy have always been based on continuity, mutual respect and regard for the sides’ interests. We expect Luigi Di Maio’s visit to provide an additional impetus to the development of the Russian-Italian dialogue.
Russian-Italian cooperation continues its progressive development, despite the unfavourable situation caused by the sanitary and epidemiological crisis and the objective factors impeding the bilateral dialogue, such as Italy’s membership of the Euro-Atlantic organisations.
During the talks, the foreign ministers will discuss a broad range of international issues that are of mutual interest to the sides, including international security cooperation with a focus on strategic stability and arms control. It is planned that they will pay special attention to Russia-EU relations, the situation in Ukraine, Belarus and Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as settlement in Libya and Syria. In addition, the sides will also broach G20 collaboration, given Italy’s chairmanship of this organisation in 2021.
The ministers will also exchange views on current matters related to Russian-Italian interstate relations in the political, economic, cultural and humanitarian areas, as well as contacts between civil societies.
