Press release on Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko’s telephone conversation with Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Alternate Foreign Minister of the Hellenic Republic and Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe
On June 9, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko had a telephone conversation with Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Alternate Foreign Minister of the Hellenic Republic and Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe at the initiative of the Greek side.
The discussion focused on the priorities of the Greek presidency in the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (May 15 - November 18, 2020) and noted the importance of utilising the potential of the Council of Europe and its specialised agencies and conventions to achieve the main goal of Athens, namely, the protection of human life and public health in the COVID-19 pandemic, while at the same time ensuring respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
The officials noted the need to formulate a unifying and constructive agenda and to step up efforts to guarantee the social and economic rights of Europeans.
The Russian party urged Greece to devote due attention during its presidency to the problems of discrimination against the Russian and Russian-speaking population in Ukraine and the Baltic states, including in education. Alexander Grushko also urged Greece to respond accordingly to attempts to glorify Nazi accomplices and to desecrate monuments to the soldiers-liberators, especially during the year of the 75th anniversary of Victory.
The parties discussed certain matters of bilateral cooperation, including in the area of archives and culture.
