Comment by the Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the visit of the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, to Spain
On the 4 March the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, will make a work-related visit to Spain. During his stay in Madrid, the head of the Russian foreign service will be welcomed by the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, as well as also conducting negotiations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Manuel García-Margallo. This visit will become a new link in the chain of Russian-Spanish contacts at summit and high levels, it will allow us to continue a trustworthy exchange of opinions about the main issues of development of our bilateral relations and international life.
During meetings with the Spanish authorities, they will discuss the current state of our bilateral cooperation, which has reached the level of a strategic partnership. Taking into consideration another session -the 8th- of the Intergovernmental mixed Russian-Spanish commission for economic and industrial cooperation, to be held on the 20-21 March in Madrid, there are plans to place the main emphasis on implementation of the most important projects in the trade, economic and investment areas, to be implemented in Russia and Spain. The current state of Russian-Spanish interagency interaction, as well as prospects of further extension of the contractual legal framework of our relations will also be reviewed.
We intend to devote special attention to the interaction of the foreign services of the two countries. For the purposes of ensuring a regular exchange of opinions on the most topical bilateral and international topics, Sergey Lavrov and José Manuel García-Margallo will sign a Plan of political consultations between the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain for 2014-2015.
The political dialogue between Moscow and Madrid traditionally demonstrates a high degree of mutual understanding, which is based on closeness or matching of our approaches to the key problems of modern times. The ministers will exchange opinions on the problems of Russia's relations with the European Union and NATO, prospects of Russian-Spanish interaction in the UN, as well as discussing the state of affairs in Ukraine, the situation around Syria, in the Middle East and North Africa, and other issues on the international agenda.
