Arkhangelsk region.

 

Date of Foundation

Arkhangelsk region was formed on September 23, 1937 as a result of Northern area of RSFSR separation.

 

Geographical Position

Arkhangelsk region is located in the North-European part of Russia.
Its coast is washed by the waters of the White Sea, the Barents Sea and the Cara Sea. In terms of territory Arkhangelsk region is contiguous with the Republic of Komi, Kirov region, Vologda region and the Republic of Karelia.
The region incorporates territories of Nenets Autonomous District, Novaya Zemlya Island and Franz Josef Archipelago.

 

Federal District

The region is a part of the North-West Federal District.

 

Territory

Arkhangelsk region occupies the territory of 413.1 thousand km2 (excluding Nenets Autonomous District), 589.9 thousand km2 (including
Nenets Autonomous District).

 

Population

As of January 1, 2020 the population of Arkhangelsk region is 1 092.4 thousand people. The density is 2.6 people per 1 km2 with 78.8% share of urban population (as of January 1, 2020).

 

Cities
The administrative center of the region is Arkhangelsk with the population of 347.0 thousand people (according to the data of January 1, 2020). The largest cities of Arkhangelsk region are Severodvinsk (182.0 thousand people), Kotlas (62.0 thousand people), Novodvinsk (37.7 thousand people), Koryazhma (35.7 thousand people).

 

National Composition of the Population         
=National composition of Arkhangelsk region population is comparatively homogeneous. According to national population census data (2010), 98% defined their nationality and their national diversification as follows: the Russians – 94.7%, the Ukrainians – 1.4%, the Belarusians – 0.5%, the Nenets – 0.04%, the Komi – 0.08%, the Tatars – 0.2%, other nationalities – 1.1%.

Industrial production.

The index of regional industrial production in 2020 in Arkhangelsk region reached 96.8% to the level of 2019 that is primarily based on negative dynamics in extractive industry of Arkhangelsk region.

An increase in production volumes can be noted in following positions: production of beverages (by 21.1%), production of textiles (by 29.1%), pulp and paper industry (by 11.2%), shipbuilding (by 2.8%).

Investments

The volume of investments to economy of Arkhangelsk region in 2020 amounted to 108.5 bln RUB, an increase to the rate of 2019 is 4.7% (about 12.4 bln RUB).

 

Mining Industry

Arkhangelsk region has mineral-raw material bases of federal significance:

aluminum industry – Severoonezhsk bauxite area in Plesetsky municipal district. Bauxite reserves account for 18% of all-Russian reserves;

diamond industry – Zimneberezhny diamondiferous area with stocks bearing 20% of all-Russian diamond reserves;

polymetallic industry – Pavlovsk deposit of silver-lead-zink ores in Novaya Zemlya is one of the five largest deposits of the kind in Russia;

hydrocarbons – deposits in the Nenets Autonomous District and continental shelf of the Barents and the Kara Seas.

 

Timber Complex of Arkhangelsk region

Arkhangelsk region is one of the leading forest industry regions of Russia. The largest factories for chemical and mechanical processing of wood are located here.        

Capacity for pulping is over 2.1 mln tons, for paper and cardboard product group – 1.6 mln tons, for production of sawn timber – 2.0 mln meters3, plywood – 145.0 thousand meters3, fuel pellets – 353.0 thousand tons.   
The region provides a quarter of Russian pulp volumes, 9% of sawn timber, 28% of pellets. Since 2014, office paper has been produced in various formats as well as import-substituting products such as coated paper.

In order to improve work of regional forestry complex, including creation of conditions for effective innovations implementation, the Strategyfor Arkhangelsk region’s Forest Industry Complex Development was adopted for the period until 2030.

Arkhangelsk region supplies coniferous lumber, birch plywood, bleached pulp, cardboard and paper products of various kinds, wood chemistry products, wood pellets to the markets. Pulp and paper production prevails
in the volume of shipped products.  
Up to 80 countries worldwide import Arkhangelsk forest on a constant basis. Due to the geographically convenient location, the industry is focused on supplying products abroad.  

About 60% of market pulp, 40% of paper and cardboard product group’s products, about 65% of produced lumber are shipped outside the country by sea transport through the ports of the cities of Arkhangelsk and Onega and by rail. Major buyers of lumber are Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, China, Azerbaijan and Egypt. Consumers of pulp and paper and cardboard product group’s products are Poland, Germany, Republic of Korea, Italy, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Romania, neighboring countries, countries of central and southeast Asia.

 

Housing construction

In 2020 on the territory of Arkhangelsk region were built 352.6 thousand sq. m of housing, which is 9.5% higher than the same period in 2019. Individual developers built 143.6 thousand sq. m, which is 20.2% higher than the level
of 2019. The largest share of total commissioned area accounts for Arkhangelsk (28.6%), Severodvinsk (23.6%), Primorsky municipal district (12.6%) and Kotlas (9.1%).

 

Consumer Market      
In 2020 retail turnover amounted to 271.0 bln RUB, which is a decrease by 0.6% to the level of 2019; turnover of food industry decreased by 21.8%
and amounted to 12.0 bln RUB.

In 2020 a share of food products in macrostructure of retail turnover was 52.5%, nonfood products – 47.5%.

The main volume of retail turnover is formed by organisations that are not related to small and medium-sized businesses: in the structure of retail trade turnover in 2020, the share of such organisations was 42.8%. The share of individual entrepreneurs (outside the market) was 31.0%, small businesses – 24.3%, medium-sized businesses – 1.5%, share of market and fair sales – 0.4%.

In 2020 population of Arkhangelsk region received commercial services for 58.2 bln RUB which is 24.2 % lower compared to the rate of 2019.

The situation in the consumer market of Arkhangelsk region is stable, the ratio of market supply and demand is balanced.

Index of consumer prices in December, 2020 (if compared with December 2019) was 104.7%, including consumer prices for foodstuff (if compared with December 2019) that increased by 6.0%, nonfood goods – by 4.8%, commercial services for population – by 2.9%.

 

Living Standards

Average monthly income per capita in 2020 was 34 439.1 RUB with an increase by 1.7% to the rate of 2019; real disposable income decreased
by 3.2%. In 2020 average monthly wage in enterprise sector of Arkhangelsk region reached the amount of 52 151.3 RUB and increased by 4.7% in comparison with 2019. Real wages increased by 0.9%.

 

Foreign Trade

The foreign trade turnover of Arkhangelsk region in 2020 compared to 2019 decreased by 17.8% and amounted to 2319.5 mln USD. The value of imports fell by 17.5%, while the decline in exports was 17.9%.

In January – December, 2020 the organisations of Arkhangelsk region kept foreign trade links with 110 world countries.

Arkhangelsk region is focused on economic links with non-CIS countries (in 2020 the share of which in regional turnover was 94.0%).

The leading countries in the regional foreign trade turnover are: the Netherlands, China, Belgium, Finland and Germany, total turnover amounted to 58.6% if compared with region’s turnover as a whole.

In 2020 foreign trade operations were carried out by 206 participants of the foreign trade activities of Arkhangelsk region (exported goods – 132, imported –106).

Foreign trade turnover of Arkhangelsk region in January – June 2021 amounted to 1,641.0 million US dollars. Compared to the same period last year, there was an increase in trade turnover by 47.5%, an increase in exports by 36.2%, an increase in imports by 2.5 times. The ratio of exports and imports value in turnover was 83:17.

Among Russia’s federal subjects that are part of the Northwestern Federal District (hereinafter – the NWFD), Arkhangelsk region ranks the sixth place in terms of trade (3.5% of  NWFD value), the fifth place in terms of exports (5.1%), and the sixth place by import volumes.

In January – June 2021 trade operations were carried out with partners from 103 countries. The largest counterparty countries are the Netherlands (17.8% of turnover), France (10.5%), the United States (10.1%). The total trade turnover with these countries amounted to 38.4% of Arkhangelsk region total trade turnover.

In January – June 2021, 174 participants of Arkhangelsk region foreign economic activity carried out foreign trade: 121 participants exported goods, imported  – 83.

The total number of exporters – small and medium-sized businesses of Arkhangelsk region, including individual entrepreneurs (hereinafter referred to as SMEs), in January – June 2021 amounted to 94 business entities, of which 90 entities exported non-primary goods, 88 entities exported non-primary non-energy goods. Share of SMEs exports in total volume of Arkhangelsk region exports was 19.3%, in total volume of non-resource exports – 35.7%, in total volume of non-resource non-energy exports – 35.6%.

The number of partner countries in Arkhangelsk region export – 99 (in January – June 2020 there were 101 countries). Main countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, China.

Leading positions in exports are occupied by timber and pulp and paper products (47.9%), mineral products (38.2%), other goods (9.0%, in this enlarged commodity group the share of rough diamonds exports to Belgium amounted
to 94.2 %). Structural shifts in exports are significant due to an increase in oil exports and petroleum products, wood and pulp and paper products.

Number of partner countries in Arkhangelsk region import is 53 (in January – June 2020 – 44 countries). Main countries: France, the United States, the Netherlands.

The share of mechanical engineering products in imports was 91.6%, chemical products – 4.2%. Structural shifts in imports are insignificant.

 

Export Operations of Arkhangelsk region

Export operations of regional companies are mainly focused on foreign market. By results of January – June 2021 the volume of export to non-CIS countries amounted to 95.1% of total export volume.
