Comment by the Information and Press Department on the upcoming visit to Russia by OIC Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani

  • en-GB1 ru-RU1

Iyad Ameen Madani, Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), will pay a working visit Russia on June 11 at the invitation of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Mr Madani will attend a meeting of the Russia-Islamic World Strategic Vision Group in Moscow.

Mr Lavrov and Mr Madani will discuss the further development of cooperation between Russia and the OIC. Consultations on the fight against terrorism and extremism, as well as on human rights, have been added to the list of subjects that are traditionally of interest to the OIC countries, such as regional crises and trade, and economic and cultural cooperation.

The agenda of the upcoming talks includes an exchange of opinions on the situation in the Muslim countries of the Middle East and Africa, in particular issues of interest to the OIC such as Palestinian-Israeli relations and the situation in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, the Central African Republic and Somalia. The participants will also discuss practical aspects of the rights of religious and ethnic minorities.

Russia and the OIC, in which Russia was granted observer status 10 years ago, recognise the primacy of international law for settling disputes between countries, and agree that crises must be settled by political means. These shared views form the basis for Russia-OIC cooperation at the UN and other international organisations.

The predominantly Muslim regions of Russia are actively cooperating with the OIC and its member countries. On June 15-16, Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, will host the VII International Economic Summit of Russia and OIC Countries, which has become the main venue for meetings of the sides’ MPs, politicians and business people.

We hope the upcoming visit by the OIC Secretary General to Moscow will boost the traditionally friendly relations between Russia and the Muslim world, which are a vital factor of international stability.
