Press release on the 15th anniversary of launching cooperation between Russia as an observer state and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation
On June 30, the Russian Permanent Mission to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah and the Russia-Islamic World Strategic Vision Group, as well as the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, organised a videoconference on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of granting observer state status to the Russian Federation at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the OIC Ramazan Abdulatipov moderated the videoconference. The event involved Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Yousef Al-Othaimeen, Deputy Speaker of the Russian Federation Council Ilyas Umakhanov, Special Representative of the Russian Foreign Minister for Cooperation with Organisations of Muslim States, Ambassador at Large Konstantin Shuvalov, and Deputy Chair of the Russia-Islamic World Strategic Vision Group Farit Mukhametshin.
Rustam Minnikhanov, Chair of the Russia-Islamic World Strategic Vision Group and President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Radiy Khabirov, head of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Mahmoud-Ali Kalimatov, head of the Republic of Ingushetia, Vyacheslav Bitarov, head of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania and Sergey Aksyonov, head of the Republic of Crimea, sent their greetings to videoconference participants.
Speakers included former leaders of the OIC and of the Russian Permanent Mission to the OIC, top officials of the Organisation’s institutions, representatives of the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and members of the Russia-Islamic World Strategic Vision Group. Russian representatives gave a detailed account of the results of the 15-year-long cooperation between Russia and the OIC that has a great potential and noted that the parties had managed to bring their positions closer in their dialogue with a broad agenda. They emphasised that the efforts to further expand ties with Muslim states meet with wide-ranging public support in Russia.
In turn, Secretary-General of the OIC Yousef Al-Othaimeen said that this Organisation attached great significance to expanding relations with Russia. He also underscored a high level of mutual understanding between them on matters of maintaining peace, ensuring security, addressing regional problems, especially the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and other conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa, counter-terrorism operations and efforts to advance inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue. Yousef Al-Othaimeen urged Muslim states to step up constructive cooperation with the Russian Federation.
