On May 27, Russia’s Permanent Mission to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah, the Russian Embassy to Saudi Arabia and the Group of Strategic Vision “Russia – Islamic World,” and the Embassy of Kazakhstan to Saudi Arabia organised an international videoconference, At the Origins of Modern Diplomatic Relations with the Islamic World: the Life and Service of Karim Khakimov and Nazim Tyuryakulov. The event was held as part of the events dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the Russian Federation joining the group as an observer.

The participants were Ramazan Abdulatipov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to OIC; Farit Mukhametshin, Deputy Chairman of the Group of Strategic Vision “Russia – Islamic World;” Oleg Ozerov, Ambassador-at-Large and Head of the Secretariat of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum; Member of the Board - Minister in charge of Energy and Infrastructure of the Eurasian Economic Commission Tair Mansurov; Askar Musinov, Deputy Secretary General of OIC; and Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Saudi Arabia Berik Aryn. Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassadors of the Russian Federation, who at different times led the Soviet and Russian embassies in a number of Arab and African countries, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Association of Russian Diplomats Andrei Baklanov; and Director of the Center for the Partnership of Civilizations at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) Veniamin Popov also took part in the event.

The Russian, Kazakh and Saudi participants exchanged views on the contribution made by Soviet diplomats Karim Khakimov and Nazim Tyuryakulov to laying the groundwork for relations between Russia and the Islamic world, primarily Saudi Arabia. As is known, Soviet Russia was the first country to recognise Saudi Arabia in 1926. The first Soviet envoy to hand the credentials to the founding king of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Abdulaziz ibn Saud, was outstanding diplomat and statesman Karim Khakimov.

Opening the videoconference, Deputy Chairman of the Group of Strategic Vision “Russia – Islamic World” Farit Mukhametshin talked about the June 2 release of the book “Karim Khakimov: Chronicles” by Ambassador-at-Large Oleg Ozerov, who had previously headed the Russian embassy in Saudi Arabia for seven years and served as part-time permanent representative of Russia to the OIC for six years. According to Mr Mukhametshin, this multifaceted book combines the results of scientific research, literature, and journalism. A presentation of the book is planned, as well as an online conference with the participation of young diplomats from the CIS countries.

During the videoconference, the participants discussed a number of other topics concerning the history of the progressive development of Russia’s ties with the Islamic world.
