Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with Nigerien Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, African Integration and Nigeriens Abroad Ibrahim Yacoubou
On March 1, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, African Integration and Nigeriens Abroad of the Republic of Niger Ibrahim Yacoubou, who is in Moscow on a working visit.
The engaged and constructive discussion reviewed the practical aspects of bilateral cooperation. The two ministers affirmed their mutual desire to intensify cooperation in trade and the economy, political matters and other areas, including developing ties in the education sector. They noted the importance of expanding business contacts and the need to strengthen the legal framework for bilateral relations.
The two ministers had a substantive exchange of views on key issues on the international and regional agendas, with particular emphasis on the need to consolidate the international and African communities’ collective efforts to combat terrorism and extremism, in particular in the Sahara-Sahel region, in Mali, Libya, and in the Middle East and Syria.
They expressed a common position on the need for a broad front to fight terrorism and stressed that both countries were ready to strengthen their partnership within the UN and in other multilateral organisations.
Mr Lavrov expressed his condolences over the recent terrorist attack against a Nigerien military patrol near the border with Mali, which caused much loss of life. Mr Yacoubou thanked him for his words of sympathy and support.
