Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s participation in a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers
On September 26, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov chaired a traditional meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. As per the group’s tradition, the meeting was organised by Russia as the country that will assume the BRICS Presidency in 2020.
The participants exchanged opinions on a wide range of current international matters, including those on the agenda of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly. The ministers spoke about peace and security, global economic stability as well as sustainable development. They reaffirmed their resolve to strengthen coordination within the BRICS at international venues based on their countries’ commitment to the principle of multilateralism and the goal of creating a fairer world order based on international law and the central role of the UN.
The ministers also spoke about collaboration within BRICS, including in the context of the preparations for the upcoming 11th BRICS Summit to be held in Brasilia on November 13-14. Sergey Lavrov spoke to his colleagues about Russia’s plans for its presidency of the group in 2020.
A joint communique was adopted following the meeting.
