Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks at a meeting with President of the Libyan House of Representatives Aguila Saleh, Moscow, November 24, 2020
Today we are meeting in a calmer situation than last time. Many positive events have taken place in Libya and around it as a result of your efforts. A ceasefire has been observed for a long time. Your meeting with Prime Minister of the Libyan Government of National Accord Fayez al-Sarraj in August was instrumental for relaunching a political process. It is ongoing, even though there have been some problems, and is even gaining momentum.
We are very impressed by your resolve to involve all the main political forces and all regions of your country in the settlement process. We have the same attitude. For many years we have maintained active contacts with all representatives of the Libyan political forces and will promote the implementation of your initiatives.
Our countries also have a practical interest in this. The sooner problems are resolved and normal post-conflict life resumes in Libya, the sooner will we be able to reset our bilateral ties in all spheres, including energy, transport infrastructure and, in general, implement economic and investment projects in the interests of our nations.
We are also interested in resuming other contacts, in particular, interparliamentary exchanges. You have come to Russia at the invitation of the State Duma, and I know that you plan to meet with its leaders. I hope that your visit will be successful in all respects. We will do our best towards this end.
Once again, welcome to Moscow.
