Press release on Anatoly Dobrynin commemoration event
An event was held to commemorate Anatoly Dobrynin, an outstanding Russian diplomat and public figure, as part of celebrations of his 100th birthday.
The event was attended by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, senior ministry officials, representatives from the Russian Federal Assembly, heads of leading academic institutions and specialised universities, veterans, young diplomats and Anatoly Dobrynin’s former colleagues and family.
In his remarks, Sergey Lavrov emphasised Anatoly Dobrynin’s diplomatic merits, especially as the USSR’s ambassador to the US, where he worked for almost 25 years, and the great contribution to settling international crises such as the Caribbean Crisis (Cuban Missile Crisis) and the arms control issue. Mr Lavrov stressed the importance and popularity of his studies for building Russia’s foreign policy course on the global stage in today’s difficult conditions.
The participants also remembered Anatoly Dobrynin’s extraordinary personal qualities, his highly professional and open manner of communication with partners and willingness for dialogue, always combined with the firm protection of Russia’s interests.
Special anniversary greetings from the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres were read.
Awards were presented to the winners of the contest of essays on Anatoly Dobrynin’s diplomatic heritage. Employees of the ministry, Russian foreign ministers and education and scientific centres from various Russian cities took part in the contest.
Sergey Lavrov and Head of the Federal Communications Agency Oleg Dukhovnitsky also took part in a ceremony to cancel a specially marked envelope, issued in a million copies, to mark the anniversary of Anatoly Dobrynin.
This commemoration night concluded the series of anniversary events held last year and this year and dedicated to one of the most famous Russian diplomats, Anatoly Dobrynin.
