Press release on Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov’s consultations with Permanent Secretary of the Group of Five for the Sahel Maman Sambo Sidikou
On April 11, Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov met with Permanent Secretary of the Group of Five for the Sahel [G5 Sahel] (Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad) Maman Sambo Sidikou at the Foreign Ministry for consultations. Maman Sambo Sidikou is in Moscow on a working visit.
During the consultations the officials expressed their commitment to developing constructive dialogue between Russia and the sub-regional organisation, including in the UN and in other multilateral forums in order to promote peace and security in the Sahel-Sahara region. They emphasised both parties’ willingness to seek collective answers to the multiple challenges posed by the surge in terrorism and religious extremism that countries in the Sahel-Sahara region have to deal with. Given these challenges, Russia supported the adoption of the UN Security Council resolution on creating the G5 Sahel Joint Force in December last year.
The officials had an in-depth discussion on current international and African issues, reaffirming their consolidated opinion in favour of boosting the UN peacekeeping role and stepping up the international community’s efforts to counter terrorism, drug trafficking and other global threats. They spoke about the need to resolve regional conflicts and crisis situations through political means, inclusive dialogue and a search for a reasonable compromise.
