Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s talks with Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Walid Muallem
On August 30, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian Arab Republic Walid Muallem who arrived in Moscow on a working visit.
During the meeting, Mr Lavrov and Mr Muallem focused on a trust-based discussion of developments connected with Syria, including the prospects for an intra-Syrian negotiation process, based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254. They also noted their countries’ mutual desire to take coordinated steps, as part of intensifying multilateral efforts, including in the Astana format, to promote the steady advancement of the Syrian settlement and the final elimination of the hotbed of international terrorism in the SAR.
They explored in detail aspects of setting up the Constitutional Committee in accordance with the decisions made at the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi, and arranging a safe and dignified return of Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons to places of permanent residence.
The Russian side reaffirmed its continued support for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria.
Mr Lavrov and Mr Muallem exchanged views on the wider situation in the Middle East and agreed to continue an in-depth political dialogue on the international and regional agenda of mutual interest to Moscow and Damascus.
