On August 7, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (EAS FMM) and the 24th Session of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) on security in Manila.

At the EAS FMM, priority was given to the preparation and content of the 12th East Asia Summit in the Philippines in November 2017. The partners supported Russia’s initiative to adopt a declaration on preventing the proliferation of terrorist ideology.

The participants exchanged views on issues of further development of the multilateral dialogue on the improvement of the security architecture in the Asia-Pacific Region. They decided to transfer the expert discussion on this topic to a permanent basis in Jakarta also involving permanent representatives of the EAS member states to ASEAN and the heads of the relevant divisions in their foreign ministries. They examined the key aspects of interaction in the main areas of EAS practical activities: energy, finance, education, healthcare, emergency response, and connectivity.

The ARF session was devoted to consolidating efforts to counter new challenges and threats, to expand confidence building measures and enhance cooperation in areas such as the antiterrorist effort, strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime, and ensuring the secure use of information and communication technologies. Statements on combating drugs and illegal, unregistered and unregulated fishing were approved.

In the course of the events, a wide range of important current issues on the international and regional agendas were discussed, including building cooperation in the fight against terrorism, the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in the South China Sea.

Russia welcomed SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov’s invitation to the 50th anniversary celebrations of ASEAN, and expressed support for the further development of ties between the SCO and ASEAN.

Sergey Lavrov held a number of bilateral meetings with EAS and ARF event participants.
