Statements and speeches by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at talks with Foreign Minister of Armenia Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, Yerevan, November 11, 2019
I am delighted to be able to visit Yerevan once again, keeping up the tradition of regular and close ties between allies and strategic partners. My day began with intense and very important talks with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. We reaffirmed our countries’ resolve to carry on a trust-based dialogue at the top level. This year alone, President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev have held four meetings each with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. They will meet again, including on the sidelines of the upcoming CSTO summit this month. We expect Mr Pashinyan to make an official visit to Russia next year. It is essential to coordinate a meaningful agenda for the meeting. Of course, we appreciate the prime minister’s decision to accept our invitation to the celebrations of Victory Day in Moscow on May 9.
The Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation and a similar body on military technical cooperation have been working sustainably to mutual benefit. The bilateral Inter-Parliamentary Commission held in Yerevan last week was attended by State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, who also arrived on a bilateral visit. They regularly hold interregional forums; the next one is scheduled for early 2020. Our humanitarian ties are based on the programme of cooperation between our culture ministries for 2019-2021. The Fifth Russia-Armenia Youth Forum will start in Moscow in 12 days. It is important for the younger generation to keep up the positive traditions of their predecessors.
Our foreign ministries closely coordinate their operations. We are grateful to Armenia for supporting our initiatives at the UN, and we will continue to support the initiatives of our Armenian friends. We will also strengthen our coordination at the CSTO and EAEU, where Armenia presided so productively this year. We will also cooperate within the CIS.
We have a packed agenda. Today we have an opportunity to see what else we can do to enhance the effectiveness of our foreign policy cooperation.
I would like to thank you for your hospitality on behalf of the Russian delegation as a whole.
