Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks at a meeting with UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov, Moscow, November 29, 2019
Mr Mladenov, my dear Nickolay,
We are delighted that you have come to the Russian Federation.
Today is a notable day, UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. President of Russia Vladimir Putin has sent a message on this occasion to President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas.
The Palestinian-Israeli settlement, which is your mandate, has been deadlocked for quite some time. This is really alarming. We would like to exchange views on this matter and to listen to your opinions regarding what can be done to get back to the solid ground of international law and to prevent a revision of the decisions of the UN General Assembly and Security Council, the Madrid Principles and the Arab Peace Initiative.
It is vitally important to involve the international community in the efforts to preserve the universally approved basis for a settlement and to prevent the replacement of collective efforts with unilateral steps, which are only eroding this basis and are hindering the creation of a Palestinian state based on the two-state solution.
In short, it is a well-timed meeting. I fully appreciate your decision to come to Moscow.
