Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks at talks with Foreign minister of Japan Taro Kono, Tokyo, May 31, 2019
I am happy to meet with you again. Indeed, we meet regularly to discuss the current issues of bilateral cooperation and ways to expedite the talks on a peace treaty based on the 1956 Declaration, per the agreement between President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe.
I agree with you that yesterday’s fourth round of the talks in the two-plus-two format was fairly useful. We appreciated the atmosphere of trust-based and friendly dialogue created by our Japanese hosts. Such dialogue promotes confidence in security and in the search for points of contact on key global and regional issues.
With regard to bilateral issues that help bring our nations closer together, I must certainly mention the cultural cross years that will come to an end in late June.
We have a very good dynamics in our contacts at the top, high and ministerial levels. It is important to convert our practical ties into content.
I am referring to the acceleration and expansion of economic cooperation and, of course, the development of our partnership in international affairs. Only in this way can we create a new quality in our relations.
In any event, I am confident and have hope that today’s talks will confirm that we have something to submit to President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe when they meet in Osaka in late June.
