Press release on the approval by the UN General Assembly of the resolution “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”

2278-05-11-2022

On November 3, the 77th session of the UN General Assembly approved the resolution “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” by 185 votes against two (USA and Israel) with two abstentions (Brazil and Ukraine). As in the past, Russia, along with the overwhelming majority of the international community, firmly and consistently supported the document and made a relevant statement.  The vote confirmed that the international community almost unanimously rejected Washington’s restrictive policies.

It is obvious that the United States is unsuccessfully attempting to give the notorious Monroe Doctrine a global scope. It seeks to give its illegal unilateral sanctions the status of a tool for coercing those who disagree with it, or a universal mechanism of political blackmail. Cuba is a graphic example illustrating the viciousness of this destructive policy. Washington has used it to achieve its time-serving aims, disregarding the opinion of the overwhelming majority of international community and ignoring not only the geopolitical reality but also the fundamental principles and norms of international law which state that any unilateral sanctions, impingement on national sovereignty, and interference in internal affairs of sovereign states are unacceptable.

The Biden administration’s vote against this resolution reflects the fact that it persists with the unlawful, unfair and destructive actions with regard to Cuba and demonstrates once again that Washington’s recently announced cosmetic exemptions fundamentally change nothing in its discriminatory course against Havana.  It is also clear that under Joe Biden, Cuba has been retained on the US list of states sponsors of terrorism, something that creates numerous obstacles in foreign trade and financial transactions.

Russia’s position of principle on the resolution remains unchanged: jointly with the friendly Cuban people and the overwhelming majority of international community, we will continue to press for an early, full and unconditional cancelation of the embargo imposed against the Freedom Island.
