Comment by the Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the new extension of the United States’anti-Iranian sanctions list
Moscow is seriously concerned about the decision of the U.S. Department of State and the Department of the Treasury, of the 6 February, to add several Iranian and foreign organisations and individuals to the United States'sanctions list. It should be noted that this has been the second decision of such a kind by Washington in the last two months. Moreover, this extension of the scope of restrictions takes place against the backdrop of the successful start of the Joint Action Plan adopted by the foreign ministers of the P5+1 international mediators and Iran, in Geneva on the 24 November 2013.
We have said many times that such decisions go against the spirit of the Geneva agreements, which, in particular, state that Washington will refrain from the introduction of new sanctions related to Tehran's nuclear activities. We view this step as unacceptable and contrary to international law. We also categorically reject any attempts to project internal laws of the United States onto third countries and use sanctions against companies and individuals who duly fulfil the requirements of the UNSC resolutions on Iran.
We are especially concerned that another extension of the US "black lists" took place almost on the eve of the start of negotiations to develop a comprehensive agreement for final settlement of the situation around Iran's nuclear programme. Such actions by the United States do not contribute to the preservation of the "spirit of Geneva" and may significantly harm the negotiation process.
