Press release on the adoption of a resolution on the need to end the US-imposed economic, trade and financial embargo against Cuba by the UN General Assembly
For the twenty-eighth time, the UN General Assembly voted in favour of the resolution on the “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.” The resolution was backed by 187 votes with three votes against (the US, Israel and Brazil) and two abstaining (Colombia and Ukraine). The international community has once again demonstrated its broad unity in denouncing the US-imposed illegal embargo against Cuba, which violates standards of international law and the UN Charter.
Most member states took part in the discussion with individual or group statements condemning the stifling 57-year-old embargo against Cuba and urged an immediate abrogation.
Speaking at the session, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin emphasised that the US’s discriminatory and illegal extraterritorial use of its national laws, something that has been growing in the past few years, is a challenge to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and undermines the foundation of the system of international relations.
Under the circumstances, Russia will invariably display its solidarity with the fraternal people of Cuba in overcoming the hardships caused by Washington’s sanctions. Russia will continue its large-scale economic and humanitarian cooperation with Cuba and facilitate the development of Freedom Island.
