Parliamentary elections in Thailand
PRESS RELEASE
By-elections for the lower house of parliament were held in Thailand on the 2 February. The results are expected to be announced after an additional voting tour, scheduled for the end of February – the beginning of March 2014, in the election wards where voting has not taken place due to various reasons. We hope that the end of the election process will contribute to swifter stabilisation of the internal political situation in Thailand and its settlement from a constitutional viewpoint.
Moreover, at the moment, antigovernmental manifestations are ongoing in Bangkok. Demonstrators are still holding up traffic in the city and blocking the activity of the main state bodies. There were confrontations between counteracting groups on the eve of the elections, involving the use of firearms, which resulted in some victims.
The situation in the main travel areas is still normal.
In these conditions, the recommendation to Russian nationals to refrain from visiting Bangkok remains in force. Those who land at airports of the capital city, should proceed to their recreation destinations without entering the city, as well as promptly organise their departure from Thailand.
