Press release on general elections in Mozambique
Presidential, parliamentary and gubernatorial elections were held in Mozambique on October 15. According to the National Electoral Commission’s preliminary data, the incumbent head of state and candidate of the ruling Frelimo Party Filipe Nyusi has won a convincing victory with over 70 percent of the votes. Ruling party candidates have also gained a majority in the parliamentary and gubernatorial elections.
The voting was monitored by about 400 foreign observers from the African Union, Southern African Development Community, the EU and Mozambique’s NGOs. No serious violations were detected.
Moscow welcomes the success of such an important event in Mozambique’s domestic political life. In our understanding this is another significant step in the advance of Mozambican society along the road of political stability and socio-economic development.
