MFA Spokesman Andrei Nesterenko’s Comments in Response to a Media Query on Latvian Foreign Minister Aivis Ronis’s Remarks Published in the Newspaper Latvijas Avize
Question: How could you comment on the remarks by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Aivis Ronis in an interview with the Latvian newspaper Latvijas Avize to the effect that "Russia's frankness about that tragic time" (in the middle of the last century) and the openness of Russian archives "would be a big step towards recognition (by Russia) of the occupation of the Baltic States"?
Comment: Russia's stand on the so-called occupation of the Baltic States by the Soviet Union has been repeatedly stated, and remains unchanged. For us, this issue is closed, and we do not intend to return to it. Any speculations by official Riga on this account can only bring a serious irritant in Russian-Latvian relations.
As to openness of Russian archives, they are open just as much as current Russian legislation allows. Existing restrictions, as indeed in other countries, stemming, for example, from the limitations period and a number of other reasonable factors, are a normal practice, recognized worldwide. Conditions of access to Russian archives have been repeatedly and thoroughly communicated to the Latvian side. Attempts by official Riga to get some kind of exclusive rights in these circumstances evoke bewilderment.
