Below follows the information the Foreign Ministry has received from competent Russian agencies in connection with an incident with Latvian journalists on the territory of the Pskov Region.
On May 8, 2005, three Latvian journalists: Eriks Pakalns, b. 1962, Maris Jurgensons, b. 1956, and Ivo Kirsblats, b. 1956, entered from Latvia into the territory of Russia via the Ludonka checkpoint of the Pytalovsky District of the Pskov Region. The officially declared aim of the trip: coverage of the celebration in the Pskov Region of the 60th anniversary of Victory.
On May 9, 2005, around 10 o'clock in the morning in Pytalovo these journalists, as they were carrying out an unauthorized video filming of the town's railway junction, attracted the attention of workers of the line department of internal affairs at the Skaigali railway post. Upon the appearance of militia officers the Latvian journalists made an attempt to sneak away. For giving explanations they were taken to a post of immigration control.
During the ascertainment of all the circumstances of the incident, it was established that the persons had entered the territory of Russia on service journalist visas. At the same time the Latvian journalists admitted they did not have the necessary permission to film the aforesaid object.
It was pointed out to the Latvian journalists that their actions were illegal, and that in case of their further stay on the territory of the Russian Federation they should register in a prescribed manner.
After the investigation the journalists on the same day voluntarily departed the Russian Federation.
