the Republic of Latvia
Commentary by the Information and Press Department of the Foreign Ministry on the upcoming visit to Moscow of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs
On 12 January, Moscow will host talks between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of the Russian Federation and Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs of the Republic of Latvia.
The main goal of the talks is to discuss the Russia-EU agenda in connection with Latvia's EU chairmanship in the first half of 2015 as well as pressing issues of the countries' bilateral relationship.
We hope that during its first term as EU chair, Latvia will follow the principles of pragmatism and will help remove artificial obstacles to cooperation and to the effort to deal with issues of mutual interest to Russia and EU countries.
The parties will also discuss the international agenda, including a set of problems related to the situation in Ukraine, focusing on the search for a path towards starting a political process directed at overcoming the profound internal political crisis in that country, as well as on some other topical issues. As for the Russian-Latvian dialogue, its progress has been far from simple lately.
Despite the growth of bilateral trade (to $12.1 billion over the first ten months of 2014, or an increase of 30.4 percent from the same period in 2013), the general political and communication background of our relations has remained negative. One cannot help but be concerned over the persisting unfavourable situation involving the rights of our Russian compatriots, which is still far removed from modern human rights standards, the problem of wide-scale statelessness and the Latvian authorities' use of visa restrictions in relation to representatives of the Russian cultural, scientific and political science communities.
We must point out the lack of progress on many outstanding problems, including on the humanitarian track and in the area of bilateral inter-agency interaction. We proceed from the assumption that the development of constructive cooperation with Latvia, cooperation based on the principles of mutual respect and good-neighbourliness, will meet the mutual interests of our countries and peoples.
