Foreign Ministry Summons British Ambassador to Moscow Anthony Brenton
PRESS RELEASE
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 26 called in the British Ambassador to Moscow, Anthony Brenton.
He was told that the Russian side was still awaiting official explanations regarding the recent British media reports about a person of Russian extraction who had allegedly been arrested in London on suspicion of a planned attempt on Boris Berezovsky's life but a month later deported from the UK. If it was just newspaper speculation, the Russian side has the right to expect its official public refutation. But if the British side does have some evidence of the man's criminal designs and if he is really a Russian, then the legitimate question arises why British law enforcement agencies, having deported the crime suspect from the country, not only did not notify the Russian authorities, but even did not tell them his name.
The Russian side continues to insist on receiving exhaustive explanations on that score as well as guarantees that such actions by the British authorities do not create a threat to the security of Russian citizens.
