Press release on Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov’s meeting with Head of the Directorate for North Africa and the Middle East of the French Foreign Ministry Christophe Farnaud
On November 7, Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov received Christophe Farnaud, head of the Directorate for North Africa and the Middle East of the French Foreign Ministry. On the same day, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Kinshchak held consultations with him.
The discussion focused on the situation in North Africa with an emphasis on the crisis in Libya as well as the developments in the Persian Gulf, Iraq, Lebanon and Algeria. The officials acknowledged the need to promote comprehensive and non-confrontational approaches to address the existing problems in the region in strict compliance with the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the local states.
The sides reaffirmed Russia and France’s principled position in support of a two-state solution to the Palestine-Israeli conflict based on international law, including the corresponding UN Security Council resolutions, the decisions of the Madrid Conference and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Following the meeting, the officials stressed that both sides were interested in continuing in-depth bilateral consultations on issues of mutual interest on the regional agenda.
