Comment by Information and Press Department on the terrorist attacks on the Sinai Peninsula
On January 29, a series of well-coordinated terrorist attacks was launched in the Egyptian cities of Al-Arīsh, Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid in the North Sinai Governorate. Militants from the Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis organisation, with ties to the ISIS terrorist group, used mortars and small arms to attack a number of Egyptian army and security agency installations. At least 26 people were killed and over 50 wounded during attacks on checkpoints, police stations and a hotel for military personnel, according to the media reports.
Moscow resolutely condemns the militant attacks in North Sinai and expresses complete solidarity with the people and leaders of friendly Egypt in their struggle against the terrorist threat. We express our condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased, and wish a speedy recovery to those wounded.
We consider it necessary to confirm the recommendations of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Russian tourists staying in Egypt, who should display caution, stay inside resort areas and avoid visiting highly dangerous places.
