Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on the Russian citizen detained in Denmark
The Russian Foreign Ministry is monitoring the situation concerning the Russian citizen who was detained in Denmark in July of this year and charged with working for the Russian security services. He has been provided with a lawyer. He pleads not guilty.
We consider the arrest and the beginning of the trial to be the next stage of anti-Russian hysteria on the part of Copenhagen. Such unsubstantiated accusations resemble a witch-hunt, thereby jeopardising the activities of Russian specialists in Denmark.
Since the Russian citizen was detained, the consular department of the Russian Embassy in Denmark has been providing him with the necessary assistance, repeatedly visiting him in a temporary detention facility and helping to get in touch with his family and friends.
We hope that justice – despite the biased nature of the charges against our compatriot – will prevail.
