Representation Made at Foreign Ministry to the Czech Ambassador in Moscow, Miroslav Kostelka
Unofficial translation from Russian
PRESS RELEASE
On June 28, the Russian Foreign Ministry made a representation to the Czech Ambassador in Moscow, Miroslav Kostelka, over the action held in Brno on June 25 involving local authorities to remove the Soviet symbols from the monument erected at the burial place of 326 Red Army soldiers who died in 1945 in the battles for the liberation of Czechoslovakia. It was stressed that those actions run counter to the provisions of the Russian-Czech intergovernmental agreements and are seen by us as an act of vandalism.
After declaring a protest, the Russian side demanded that an investigation of the incident should be carried out, those found guilty punished and the monument restored to its original form.
The ambassador expressed regret over what had happened, and acknowledged that the monument in Brno, like the other monuments in burial places, is under the protection of the international obligations of the Czech Republic. On behalf of the leadership of the country he declared profound respect for the fallen in the liberation of Czechoslovakia in the Second World War.
