Comment by the Information and Press Department on the terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso
On January 15, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks took place in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, including an armed attack on a café and the Splendid international hotel with the seizing of 120 hotel guests as hostages. Over 20 people, mainly foreign citizens from 18 countries, were killed and 30 were injured. As a result of a rescue operation by Burkina Faso security forces, the terrorists were disarmed and the hostages released.
According to the Russian Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire, which also serves as an embassy to Burkina Faso, as well as Russia’s honourary consul to Ouagadougou, there are no Russian citizens among the victims.
Moscow strongly condemns this criminal raid for which the Al Murabitun extremist group, affiliated with the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb terrorist organization, has claimed responsibility. The Foreign Ministry would like to express its sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed and to wish a rapid recovery to those injured in the attack.
