Unveiling of Yuri Gagarin’s bust in Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium
A solemn ceremony to unveil the bust of Yuri Gagarin took place in Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium on August 20 in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the first manned spaceflight.
The bronze monument created by the well-known Russian sculptor Alexey Leonov is a donation by the Fund “Dialogue of Cultures – United World”. The bust was delivered to Australia under the program of the Russian Association for International Cooperation assisted by the Embassy of the Russian Federation. Significant contribution was also made by Russian Honorary Consul-General in the states of Queensland and Victoria, Dean of the Consular Corps in Brisbane Irina Bruk.
The ceremony was attended by Adrian Shrinner, the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Nicole Andronicus, Director of International Relations and Multicultural Affairs, members of the City Council, Russian compatriots, representatives of the consular corps. The Ambassador of Russia to Australia Dr Alexey Pavlovsky in his video message emphasized the unfading historical significance of Yuri Gagarin’s flight. He furthermore pointed out that our country had ushered the human race into space era and consistently supported broad international cooperation for the peaceful exploration of space.
