Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s upcoming visit to the Dominican Republic

735-29-04-2025

On April 30, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will visit the Dominican Republic as part of his Latin American tour. The visit will be held in the aftermath of the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations, established on March 8, 1945, and in connection with the opening of the Russian Embassy.

Sergey Lavrov plans to meet with President of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader and Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez.

The sides will discuss the further development of bilateral cooperation, including the possibility of boosting political dialogue, building up trade, economic, investment, tourism, cultural and humanitarian cooperation, and strengthening the contractual framework. They will also talk about current issues on the global and regional agenda.

The Dominican Republic is a promising partner in Latin America and the Caribbean. We highly appreciate our traditionally friendly ties based on the principles of mutual respect and constructive dialogue.

The establishment of a Russian embassy in the Dominican Republic marks a new stage in the consistent development of bilateral ties.

On April 14, Ambassador Designate of the Russian Federation to the Dominican Republic Alexey Seredin presented the copies of his credentials to Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez and assumed his duties in Santo Domingo.

Tourism, which remains a key sphere of Russian-Dominican cooperation, has been boosted by the intergovernmental agreement on mutual visa-free travel by private individuals, which came into effect on December 15, 2020.

It is with good reason that the Dominican Republic is a popular destination with Russian tourists. During the post-COVID year of 2021, it was in the group of top 20 countries by the number of Russian tourists, 166,000 of whom visited that Caribbean republic.

Educational exchanges hold a special place in the system of bilateral relations. State scholarships are annually granted to the Dominican young people studying at Russian universities. The quota for the 2024/2025 academic year is 15.

Overall, there are more than 3,200 graduates of Soviet and Russian universities in the Dominican Republic.

Moscow and Santo Domingo are fruitfully cooperating on international platforms. During the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, the Dominican Republic supported the majority of Russian resolutions, in particular, the documents on combating the glorification of Nazism, on keeping outer space free of weapons and preventing it from becoming yet another sphere of tension, and on the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Second World War.

Our Dominican partners also voted for the UNGA resolution on Eradicating Colonialism in all its Forms and Manifestations, which was proposed by the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter.
